12-Year-Old Boy Killed by Stray Bullet Outside Bronx Bodega

A 12-year-old boy was killed Saturday afternoon after a fistfight outside a Bronx bodega escalated into gunfire, striking the child as he rode his bicycle past the scene. Surveillance video from the corner of Walton Avenue and Elliot Place in the Mount Eden section shows a group of men brawling in the street before one man pulled out a handgun and began firing into the crowd. The boy, identified by police as Jacob Freytes, was struck and ran into the Wanda Deli Grocery clutching his shoulder before collapsing inside the store. He was rushed to Lincoln Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Two adult men were also wounded in the gunfire, a 25-year-old shot in the lower body and a 34-year-old shot in the foot, though both are expected to survive after making their own way to area hospitals. The gunman, described as wearing a black baseball cap, a white T-shirt, and black shorts, fled the scene immediately after opening fire, and no arrests have been made as of Sunday. Investigators with the NYPD's 44th Precinct are reviewing both interior and exterior surveillance footage from the bodega as they work to identify the shooter and determine who, if anyone, was the intended target.

The shooting has shaken the Mount Eden community, with neighbors describing the boy as a well-liked kid who was simply out riding his bike on a summer afternoon when he was caught in the crossfire. Mayor Zohran Mamdani called the killing "an atrocious act" and offered condolences to the family while praising the swift response from hospital staff and police. As the investigation continues, residents and local advocacy groups are once again renewing calls for greater accountability and intervention to curb the gun violence that continues to claim young lives across the city's streets.
