The Iran-backed Islamic Resistance in Iraq has unveiled what it describes as an underground “missile city,” marking a significant escalation in the group’s public messaging and regional posture. The announcement was accompanied by a professionally produced propaganda video showing a sprawling subterranean complex filled with missile racks, military vehicles, and masked fighters operating in an organized, industrial-style environment.

The roughly three-minute video is clearly intended as a deterrence signal, closely mirroring similar underground weapons unveilings previously released by Hezbollah. Long corridors carved into rock, launch-ready missiles, and coordinated movement of personnel are presented as evidence of survivable strike capabilities designed to withstand aerial attacks and continue operations during conflict.

The Islamic Resistance in Iraq is an umbrella network of Iran-aligned Shiite militias that has claimed responsibility for more than 170 attacks against U.S. forces in Iraq and Syria since October 2023, framing its actions as part of a broader regional campaign in solidarity with Hamas. By publicly revealing hardened missile infrastructure inside Iraq, the group appears to be signaling both readiness and reach, while attempting to deter retaliation through the implication of concealed, resilient firepower.

Security analysts view the reveal as particularly dangerous because it brings the prospect of missile launches from Iraqi territory closer to reality, further entangling Iraq in regional conflict dynamics. Underground facilities complicate intelligence collection and preemptive strike options, increasing the risk of miscalculation and rapid escalation involving U.S. forces, Israel, and regional partners.

The unveiling underscores Iran’s continued strategy of empowering proxy forces with advanced capabilities while maintaining plausible deniability. As tensions remain high across the Middle East, the emergence of a publicly acknowledged missile complex in Iraq raises serious concerns about regional stability, escalation thresholds, and the growing militarization of proxy groups operating beyond direct state control.
