A dramatic lightning strike turned a routine Monday morning into chaos after it hit a transformer near a busy highway, triggering a massive explosion and fireball. Dashcam footage from a police officer captured the exact moment the bolt struck during a late-morning thunderstorm.

The blast sent flames and smoke into the air, bringing down power lines across the road and causing widespread outages in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina. Police confirmed the incident happened around 11 a.m., with traffic temporarily halted due to downed wires.

“A bit too much excitement for a Monday! The lightning strike caused our power outages and traffic delays. Fortunately, no one was injured, and Dominion Energy responded quickly, restoring power and removing the downed wires,” Mount Pleasant police posted on X alongside the footage.

The National Weather Service has issued warnings for southeast Georgia and southeast South Carolina, citing high temperatures and an elevated risk of severe thunderstorms. Monday’s transformer strike served as a vivid reminder of the hazards posed by the summer storm season.
