A United Airlines flight bound for Tokyo safely returned to Washington Dulles International Airport on Saturday after experiencing an engine failure shortly after takeoff, according to federal officials and the airline.

United Flight 803, a Boeing 777-200 carrying approximately 250 passengers and crew, lost power in one engine during ascent. Video captured from the ground shows the aircraft circling above Stafford, Virginia, as black smoke billowed from the right engine.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that a piece of the engine cover separated and caught fire after detaching from the aircraft, igniting a small brush fire on the ground near the runway. Emergency crews quickly responded and extinguished the fire. No injuries were reported either onboard the aircraft or on the ground.

Due to the aircraft’s fuel load for the trans-Pacific flight, the crew remained airborne for an extended period to burn off fuel before attempting a landing. Once conditions were safe, the aircraft returned to Dulles without further incident.

The Federal Aviation Administration has confirmed it is reviewing the event, as is standard procedure following an engine-related incident. United Airlines said passengers were safely deplaned and accommodated following the return.

The incident highlights the effectiveness of aviation safety protocols and emergency response coordination, as both flight crew and ground personnel acted quickly to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
