New York City — New York City Mayor Eric Adams touted the success of the city's crackdown on illegal scooters, announcing the confiscation of over 100,000 unregistered or improperly used motorized scooters across the five boroughs. His remarks come just days after one such scooter was reportedly used as a getaway vehicle in the shooting of a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer.

During a press briefing Wednesday, Mayor Adams emphasized the connection between illegal scooters and rising urban crime, saying these vehicles are increasingly being used in robberies, shootings, and other violent acts.

“We’re taking these scooters off the streets because too often, they’re being used as tools of crime,” Adams stated. “Over 100,000 have already been confiscated, and we are just getting started.”
