Disaster Averted in Himachal Pradesh as Train Escapes Bridge Collapse Amid Heavy Flooding

KANGRA, HIMACHAL PRADESH — A potential catastrophe was narrowly avoided in Dhangu, Kangra district, after a train carrying hundreds of passengers crossed a railway bridge just moments before its foundation collapsed due to intense flooding in the Chakki River.

Officials say the collapse was caused by relentless monsoon rains that led to dangerously high water levels and severe erosion at the base of the bridge. The structural failure occurred shortly after the train had safely passed over, sparing the lives of all on board.

Eyewitnesses described a harrowing scene, with water rushing beneath the tracks and rumbling sounds moments before the collapse. Railway personnel and local authorities have since cordoned off the area and suspended train services on the route as a precaution.

“This could have been one of the worst rail disasters in recent memory,” said a senior railway official. “Thankfully, no one was harmed, and all passengers are safe.”
