YOKOHAMA, JAPAN — What began as a festive summer celebration turned into chaos Monday night as two boats launching fireworks caught fire during a fireworks festival in Yokohama, just south of Tokyo.

The incident occurred about 20 minutes into the show, when spectators noticed flames erupting from the barges stationed offshore. The music suddenly stopped, and event organizers quickly announced the cancellation of the display "due to safety concerns."

Videos shared on social media show thick smoke and bright flames engulfing the boats, prompting emergency crews to respond. Fortunately, no serious injuries have been reported so far.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, which is believed to have been triggered by a malfunction in the fireworks launching system.

Japan’s summer festivals are known for their elaborate fireworks displays, and incidents like this are rare, making the accident all the more shocking to attendees.
