Senator Josh Hawley has raised urgent concerns about a suspected biolab in Las Vegas, warning that the facility, owned by Chinese national Jia Bei Zhu, represents a serious national security threat. In a recent Fox News interview, Hawley emphasized the potential connections to the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and warned of a possible network of similar properties across the U.S., calling for rapid and thorough investigation.  

The FBI recently raided the property, discovering refrigerators containing unknown liquids and dead insects, fueling fears over unauthorized bio-research and lapses in U.S. biosecurity. Lawmakers and national security experts note that such findings echo a 2022 biolab scandal in Reedley, California, where Prestige Biotech, affiliated with the Chinese firm Universal Meditech Inc., stored unlabeled vials of dangerous pathogens including Ebola and COVID-19-transgenic mice, prompting congressional probes into systemic biosecurity failures.  

Hawley stressed that understanding the full extent of CCP-linked operations is critical, urging authorities to investigate potential connections to other homes or labs in the United States. The situation highlights ongoing U.S. vigilance regarding foreign influence, particularly from China, in sensitive scientific and research domains. A 2023 House Select Committee report further underscores these concerns, documenting the closure of more than 100 Confucius Institutes since 2014 due to espionage risks.  

The senator’s call for swift action reflects growing bipartisan concern over the intersection of foreign influence, biosecurity, and national defense.
