A massive explosion tore through a gunpowder factory in Russia on Friday, leaving five people dead and at least 20 others injured, according to local authorities.
The blast occurred at the Elastik gunpowder plant near the city of Ryazan, located just over 100 miles southeast of Moscow. The explosion triggered a large fire that quickly engulfed parts of the facility. Ten of the injured remain in serious condition, officials confirmed.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene, battling flames and carrying out rescue operations as thick smoke rose over the factory site. Investigators are working to determine the cause of the blast, though industrial accidents at ammunition and explosives plants in Russia have been reported in the past.
The tragedy comes as Russia remains engaged in heavy fighting in Ukraine and only days before a high-profile summit in Alaska between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump. The incident underscores the mounting strain inside Russia as it juggles domestic crises and the ongoing war effort.
