Disturbing bodycam footage released by Portland police shows the violent moment a suspect allegedly struck an officer in the face with a softball-sized rock during a chaotic late-night arrest in the city’s Overlook neighborhood. Authorities said officers responded around 11:35 p.m. on May 14 after a woman reported that a man had broken into her home while she and her children were inside, threatening to kill them before fleeing the scene after she chased him away with a stick.

Police tracked the suspect through Overlook Park and nearby residential streets as officers attempted to take him into custody, but investigators said he repeatedly ignored commands to stop and continued running while carrying what initially appeared to be a metal garbage can lid. During the pursuit near a pedestrian bridge over Going Street, police said the suspect suddenly turned toward the lead officer and struck him in the head with a rock roughly the size of a softball before officers wrestled him to the ground and completed the arrest.

The injured officer was transported to a hospital, treated, and later cleared to return to duty, according to the Portland Police Bureau. Authorities identified the suspect as 35-year-old Timothy L. Reed of Portland, who now faces multiple serious charges including first-degree burglary, second-degree assault, assaulting a police officer, escape, and criminal mischief as concerns over violent attacks on law enforcement continue drawing national attention.
