A bizarre and unsettling incident in Volusia County, Florida, ended Friday after deputies located a fugitive who spent two days hiding in a swamp to avoid arrest. According to the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office, 37-year-old Earl Dorey fled from law enforcement Wednesday after being spotted driving a stolen truck. When deputies deployed stop sticks, he abandoned the vehicle near DeLeon Springs State Park and sprinted into nearby wetlands with two others.

The additional suspects were quickly detained, but Dorey continued deeper into the swamp, where dangerous wildlife, unstable terrain, and thick vegetation severely obstructed the search. Body camera footage released by the sheriff’s office shows a deputy and K-9 entering the murky water, tracking Dorey while repeatedly urging him to surrender. At one point, authorities say Dorey pointed a gun at deputies and threatened to kill himself, forcing officers to withdraw for safety.

He was ultimately located Friday, exhausted and dehydrated, with deputies noting his only complaints were thirst and leg pain from the prolonged exposure. He was taken into custody without further incident.

Dorey already had outstanding warrants and now faces multiple felony charges, including aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, fleeing and eluding, and possession of methamphetamine. The stolen truck investigation remains ongoing.
