The Israeli Air Force carried out a precision strike on an underground Hezbollah weapons facility in southern Lebanon on March 16, 2026, according to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The target, located in the village of Kafra, was reportedly used to store cruise missiles and hundreds of rockets intended for attacks against Israel.

Footage released following the operation shows multiple explosions across a hillside area, suggesting the destruction of hidden storage compartments embedded beneath the terrain. Israeli officials said the facility was part of Hezbollah’s broader network of concealed launch sites and weapons depots designed to shield its arsenal from aerial detection while maintaining the capability to strike Israeli territory.

The strike comes amid continuing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah that have intensified since cross-border hostilities escalated in October 2023. Over the course of the conflict, the IDF reports that it has destroyed more than 5,000 Hezbollah launchers and weapons storage sites across southern Lebanon. These operations are aimed at dismantling the militant group’s extensive rocket infrastructure, which remains one of the most significant security threats facing Israel along its northern border.

Although a ceasefire arrangement reached in November 2024 was intended to reduce hostilities, both sides have repeatedly accused each other of violating the agreement. Periodic rocket launches toward Israeli communities and subsequent retaliatory airstrikes have kept the region in a state of persistent instability.

Israeli military officials maintain that targeting underground weapons sites is critical to preventing large-scale rocket attacks and limiting Hezbollah’s operational capacity. The group has historically relied on hidden depots and fortified positions embedded within rural terrain to protect its stockpiles and maintain launch capabilities.

The strike on the Kafra facility highlights the ongoing effort by Israeli forces to neutralize Hezbollah’s military infrastructure while attempting to prevent a wider escalation along the Israel-Lebanon front. As exchanges continue, the destruction of weapons storage locations remains a central component of Israel’s strategy to weaken the group’s ability to conduct sustained rocket assaults against Israeli population centers.
