Twin Disasters Slam America: Hurricane Lala Batters Hawaii, Indiana Floods Kill Five

The United States is being battered on two fronts this weekend, as Hurricane Lala pounds Hawaii's Big Island while historic flooding continues to devastate Indiana. Lala strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane as it churned near the Big Island, unleashing torrential rain, damaging winds, and dangerous surf, and while the storm ultimately skirted the island without a direct landfall, its outer bands still proved deadly. At least one person was killed in a car accident tied to the storm, two homes were swept away by flash flooding in the town of Naalehu, and more than 124,000 homes and businesses across the state lost power as downed trees and utility poles littered roadways.

Nearly 2,500 miles away, Indiana is reeling from an entirely separate weather catastrophe that has already claimed at least five lives. Days of relentless rainfall, straight-line winds reaching up to 99 miles per hour in Gary, and reports of tornadoes have triggered widespread flooding, with some parts of central Indiana receiving as much as 10 inches of rain and rivers like the White River surging over their banks in Indianapolis neighborhoods. President Trump approved a federal emergency declaration for the state on Saturday evening at the request of Governor Mike Braun, unlocking FEMA resources to support state and local response efforts for storms that began battering Indiana on August 11 and have continued since.

With both disasters still unfolding, officials in Hawaii and Indiana are urging residents to remain cautious as recovery efforts get underway. Hawaii Governor Josh Green had already declared a state of emergency ahead of Lala's arrival, mobilizing the National Guard to support response efforts, while flash flood emergencies remained in effect for parts of the Big Island into Sunday. In Indiana, rescue crews continued pulling stranded residents from rising floodwaters even as the death toll climbed, underscoring just how quickly two very different storm systems on opposite sides of the country turned deadly within the same 48-hour stretch.
