Heroic police officers in New Jersey saved a man’s life in a dramatic, split-second rescue after his car erupted in flames following a severe crash. The incident unfolded along Route 27 in Franklin Township, where 26-year-old Safwan Islam slammed into a tree after reportedly suffering a medical episode behind the wheel. The impact left him unconscious and trapped as fire began spreading across the vehicle.
Authorities say the only reason help arrived in time was due to his iPhone’s “Call After Severe Crash” feature, which automatically contacted 911 after a brief countdown. That alert allowed South Brunswick Officers Yash Shroff and Thomas Sites to race to the scene while the car was already burning.
Dashcam footage shows the officers sprinting toward the wreck as flames climbed rapidly up the engine block. With no time to spare, they shattered the driver’s side window, reached into the smoke-filled cabin, and pulled Islam out just seconds before the entire vehicle was overtaken by fire. The video captures the moment the flames surged at their legs as they dragged him to safety.
South Brunswick police said the rescue was nothing short of miraculous, crediting both the iPhone emergency alert and the officers’ decisive, fearless actions. “This is a miracle by every aspect of the word miracle,” the department said. “And the officers’ actions are heroic. As you can see in the video, it’s pretty dramatic, how the flames are leaping at their feet as they’re pulling him out.”
The young man survived because two officers refused to hesitate in the face of danger—a reminder of the extraordinary risks America’s law enforcement officers take daily, and the lives saved because they run toward chaos, not away from it.
