By Sunday evening, snowfall totals reached up to 10 inches near Oneida Lake and exceeded eight inches around Albany, according to the National Weather Service. Some areas across New York saw as much as 18 inches statewide, making the storm the heaviest snowfall event of 2026 for New York City. Snowfall rates reached one to two inches per hour at the height of the storm, overwhelming roads and creating dangerous travel conditions.

Additional footage from a plow truck’s perspective shows crews clearing snow on the Thaddeus Kosciusko Bridge, also known as the Twin Bridges, over the Mohawk River along the I-87 Northway near Albany. Highway signs warned drivers to reduce speed as plowing operations continued overnight, with crews treating roads continuously to prevent ice buildup and accidents amid persistent snowfall.

The storm’s impact extended beyond travel disruptions. At least seven deaths across New York have been linked to cold exposure and snow-related accidents, as temperatures plunged and wind chills dropped to dangerous levels. Subzero conditions, including lows near minus 14 degrees Fahrenheit in Manhattan, compounded the risks for both motorists and emergency responders.

With hazardous conditions expected to persist through January 27, NYDOT continues round-the-clock plowing and salting operations, urging drivers to slow down, remain alert, and allow plows adequate space to operate safely. Officials emphasize that continued cooperation from the public remains critical as crews work to keep major arteries, bridges, and highways passable during the prolonged winter emergency.
