President Donald Trump praised Chinese President Xi Jinping following a high-profile meeting in Zhongnanhai, calling the visit “incredible” and declaring that major progress had been made on trade, international security, and relations between the world’s two largest economies. Trump emphasized the strength of his long-standing relationship with Xi, noting that the two leaders have known each other for more than a decade and have resolved disputes that previous administrations struggled to handle. The president described Xi as a leader he deeply respects and suggested the talks marked another major step toward stabilizing global tensions while strengthening economic cooperation between Washington and Beijing. Trump also pointed to several “fantastic trade deals” reached during the discussions, saying the agreements would benefit both countries and reinforce reciprocal economic ties.

A major focus of the talks centered on Iran and the growing fears surrounding Tehran’s nuclear ambitions and instability in the Middle East. Trump stated clearly that both the United States and China share similar positions on preventing Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, stressing that such an outcome “cannot happen.” He also addressed the critical importance of keeping strategic waterways open, referencing ongoing tensions surrounding key shipping routes and warning that escalating conflict could threaten global commerce and energy markets. Trump described the situation as dangerous and unpredictable, arguing that immediate action and continued diplomacy are necessary to stop further escalation before it spirals into a larger international crisis.

The president repeatedly highlighted the personal diplomacy between himself and Xi, portraying the relationship as one built on trust, direct communication, and mutual respect despite years of geopolitical competition between the two nations. Trump said both sides had become increasingly friendly during the meetings and praised Chinese representatives as “great people,” signaling a noticeably warmer tone compared to previous periods of intense economic confrontation. He also announced plans for continued negotiations and future reciprocal state visits, revealing that Xi is expected to travel to the United States while Trump anticipates returning to China later this year. Supporters of the administration viewed the meeting as another example of Trump’s deal-making approach on the world stage, combining economic leverage, direct diplomacy, and aggressive national security messaging to pursue what the White House sees as stronger outcomes for global stability and American interests.

President Trump with President Xi in Zhongnanhai:

"I want to thank you very much. This has been an incredible visit. I think a lot of good has come of it. We've made some fantastic trade deals, great for both countries. He's a man I respect greatly. He's become really a fan. We've known each other now 11 years, almost 12 years, it's a long time. And we've settled a lot of different problems that other people wouldn't have been able to settle. And the relationship is a very strong one. We've really done some wonderful things, I believe. We did discuss Iran. We feel very similar in Iran. We want that to end. We don't want them to have a nuclear weapon. We want the straits open. We're closing it now. They closed it and we closed it on top of them. But we want the straits open. And we want them to get it ended because it's a crazy thing. They're a little bit crazy and it's no good, can't have it. They cannot have a nuclear weapon. But we discussed a lot of other things also and I think we're very much on a great move. We're going to have some further discussions now with the group. But I just want to thank President Xi and all of his representatives. We've become friendly with all of them, great people. And it's an honor to be here. We'll be back, I believe, on September 24th or thereabouts. And President Xi is going to be coming to the United States. And we will be reciprocal, like reciprocal trade. The visit will be reciprocal. We're going to lay it on the line and we're going to have – you're going to walk away hopefully very impressed, like I'm very impressed with China. And I just want to end by saying thank you very much. It's been really a great couple of days. Thank you very much."
