Senator Chris Murphy (D-CT) is intensifying criticism of Pete Hegseth, President Trump’s Secretary of Defense, demanding his immediate resignation or removal over U.S. anti-drug strikes near Venezuela in September 2025. Murphy labeled Hegseth a “walking, talking national security embarrassment,” citing the controversial operations targeting narco-trafficking vessels in international waters that resulted in at least 11 deaths across two separate incidents.

The senator specifically condemned Hegseth for allegedly ordering lethal action against survivors swimming from the wreckage of the drug boats, describing such directives as a potential war crime under U.S. law. Murphy’s remarks follow a wave of Democratic scrutiny over the legality and proportionality of the strikes, framing them as excessive and highlighting what he calls a refusal to take responsibility for operational decisions.

The Trump Administration and the White House, however, defend the operations as fully lawful and consistent with U.S. counter-narcotics policy. Officials note that the strikes were aimed at disrupting international drug trafficking networks that directly threaten American communities and allies, including Israel, which faces its own regional security challenges from transnational criminal and terrorist networks.

From a pro-Trump, national-security perspective, the controversy underscores a recurring tension in Washington: partisan attacks on commanders making decisive, operationally necessary choices versus calls for strong, swift action to defend U.S. interests. Hegseth’s supporters emphasize that decisive strikes against narco-traffickers save lives, protect international law enforcement cooperation, and demonstrate America’s global reach in combatting illicit networks.

While Democrats like Murphy focus on rhetoric and legality critiques, the broader debate reflects a choice between cautious bureaucratic hesitation and robust, proactive defense policy. For Trump-aligned conservatives, Hegseth’s actions represent precisely the type of resolute leadership the U.S. military needs in confronting modern threats, whether from drug cartels or foreign adversaries.
