U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham Dies at 71 Following Brief Illness

WASHINGTON— U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina), a towering and often polarizing figure in American politics for over two decades, has died at the age of 71.

According to a statement released early Sunday morning by his office, Graham passed away Saturday evening following what was described as a “brief and sudden illness.”

Senator Graham's family appreciates prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period," the statement from his communications director read.

Emergency audio obtained by local media indicated that paramedics responded to a call regarding a medical emergency at Graham’s home on Saturday night. He was transported via ambulance to a nearby medical facility, where he was later pronounced dead.

A Defining Legacy in Washington

Born in Central, South Carolina, Graham’s journey to the highest levels of American government was rooted in public service. He served as a military lawyer in the U.S. Air Force Judge Advocate General’s (JAG) Corps and later in the Air Force Reserve, achieving the rank of colonel.

Graham entered federal politics in 1994, winning a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives during the "Republican Revolution." In 2002, he successfully ran for the U.S. Senate, filling the seat vacated by the legendary Strom Thurmond. He was subsequently re-elected four times.
