Hyderabad, India — A devastating highway collision in southern India claimed at least 20 lives early Monday when a speeding truck loaded with concrete chips crashed head-on into a passenger bus near Mirjaguda village in Ranga Reddy district, Telangana state. The tragedy unfolded around 2:30 a.m. on the Hyderabad–Bijapur highway, leaving a scene of mangled metal and chaos as emergency teams raced to rescue survivors.

Authorities said the tipping truck, attempting to overtake a motorcycle, veered into the opposite lane and struck a Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) bus carrying approximately 70 passengers. The impact was catastrophic — the truck’s gravel cargo spilled over the wreckage, burying several victims beneath tons of debris.

Among the dead were three sisters returning home from a family wedding and a three-month-old infant, according to police officials. Nearly two dozen others were rushed to local hospitals with injuries ranging from fractures to severe trauma.

Rescue operations continued for hours in the early morning darkness, with first responders using heavy machinery to remove debris and recover bodies. Authorities cited hazardous road conditions and insufficient nighttime lighting as contributing factors, while locals criticized a lack of timely ambulance response in rural stretches of the highway.

The Telangana state government has announced Rs 5 lakh (approx. $6,000) in compensation for each victim’s family, in addition to ex-gratia assistance from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund. Officials also pledged a thorough investigation into the cause of the crash, focusing on speeding violations and truck safety standards.
