A former U.S. intelligence official has issued a stark warning about Russia’s approach to the ongoing war in Ukraine, claiming Moscow is prepared to “sacrifice millions of its own people” to achieve its objectives.
Speaking on Fox Report, Andrew Borene of the National Security Institute assessed the likelihood of a settlement between Russia and Ukraine. He suggested that Russia’s leadership remains committed to a long, grinding conflict — regardless of the human cost.
“Russia has shown time and again that it is willing to absorb catastrophic losses, both military and civilian, in order to pursue its goals,” Borene said. He added that this posture complicates any path toward a negotiated settlement, as it underscores the Kremlin’s readiness to endure extreme sacrifices.
Borene noted that while Ukraine continues to push for stronger international support, the potential for compromise remains limited given Moscow’s entrenched stance and President Vladimir Putin’s insistence on controlling Ukrainian territory.
The remarks highlight ongoing concerns in Washington and European capitals about the war’s trajectory, now stretching into its fourth year. Analysts caution that without a clear off-ramp, the conflict risks becoming an even longer and bloodier standoff.
