Thirty-seven missing goats were located and rescued after being discovered 2,500 metres up Monte Cardinello in northern Italy, ending a days-long search that had left a local farm without its entire herd. The Italian fire service released footage showing rescue workers climbing the steep, rocky terrain after being airlifted by helicopter onto the mountainside where the goats had wandered.

The herd had been missing for several days, prompting concerns that the animals might have been lost to the elements or predators. Instead, rescuers found them clustered together on a narrow ridge far above their grazing area, demonstrating both the unpredictability and resilience of mountain livestock.

Once on the ridge, the rescue team carefully guided the goats down the rugged path, managing a descent from 2,500 metres to a shelter located at roughly 600 metres. Despite the harsh conditions and significant altitude, all thirty-seven animals were found in good condition.

Local authorities credited the successful recovery to the specialized alpine rescue capabilities of the fire service, as well as the coordinated helicopter support required to reach such an inaccessible location. The operation highlights the demanding nature of high-altitude animal rescue and the dedication of responders who routinely confront hazardous terrain to protect both life and property.

The herd has since been returned to its farm, bringing an end to an unusual but ultimately successful mountainside rescue.
