Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese condemned antisemitism in strong terms on Sunday, calling it a “scourge” and pledging tougher action following the deadly terror attack at a Jewish Hanukkah celebration in Sydney.

Speaking at a press conference on December 14, Albanese said antisemitism has existed for a long time but stressed that its persistence makes confronting it all the more urgent. His remarks came hours after a mass shooting at the “Chanukah by the Sea” event at Bondi Beach left at least 16 people dead and dozens more injured.

Authorities have classified the attack as an antisemitic act of terrorism targeting the Jewish community. The incident has shocked the nation and prompted renewed scrutiny of extremist violence and hate-driven attacks in Australia.

The prime minister said his government is reviewing additional measures to combat antisemitism, including potential legislative changes, enhanced law enforcement resources, and stronger monitoring of extremist activity. He emphasized that attacks motivated by hatred have no place in Australian society.

Albanese also expressed condolences to the victims and their families, reaffirming Australia’s commitment to protecting religious freedom and ensuring the safety of Jewish communities across the country as investigations into the attack continue.
