A herd of over 100 European bison, or wisent, was recently observed crossing a rural snowy road in eastern Poland at dusk, creating a striking image of untamed wildlife moving through human-dominated landscapes. Footage of the event captures the methodical pace of the herd, evoking the majesty and resilience of one of Europe’s most iconic species. While initially mislabeled as train tracks, the crossing occurred on a rural road, highlighting the bison’s careful navigation amid human infrastructure.

European bison were driven to the brink of extinction by the early 20th century, with only 54 individuals surviving by 1927. Through Poland’s dedicated conservation programs and rewilding efforts, the species has rebounded to a record 3,000 animals by 2025, making Poland the global stronghold for this once-endangered mammal.

The herd’s movement underscores the success of these conservation efforts and the careful management of Poland’s natural habitats, which now support one of the largest free-ranging populations of European bison in the world.
