A large wildfire broke out in the Arazim Valley near Jerusalem, sending plumes of smoke across the region and disrupting daily life in Israel’s capital.
The blaze, which ignited near one of the city’s major entry points, caused significant damage to a power line feeding Jerusalem. As a result, traffic lights across several neighborhoods malfunctioned, raising safety concerns for drivers and pedestrians alike.
Authorities also warned of potential closures along Highway 1 — the country’s busiest road linking Jerusalem and Tel Aviv — as flames threatened to spread closer to the route. Eight firefighting aircraft were dispatched to assist ground crews, who worked tirelessly to contain the fire and prevent it from reaching more populated areas.
While no casualties have been reported so far, officials remain on high alert. Emergency services are urging residents to stay clear of the affected zones and to follow safety instructions as efforts to fully extinguish the blaze continue.
The incident highlights the growing threat of wildfires in Israel, particularly during the hot, dry summer months when vegetation is most vulnerable.
