Israel’s military leadership says it is actively dismantling the regional network of armed groups built by Iran to threaten Israel and destabilize the Middle East. In a recent operational update, Israeli Defense Forces spokesperson Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani stated that Tehran spent years building a system of proxy forces across the region, particularly in Lebanon, designed to project power and pressure Israel from multiple fronts.

According to Shoshani, Iran’s strategy relied heavily on creating and funding militant organizations beyond its own borders. These groups were intended to function as extensions of Iranian influence, capable of launching attacks, destabilizing neighboring states, and threatening Israeli civilian populations without Tehran engaging directly in open warfare. Hezbollah in Lebanon has long been considered the most powerful component of that network, possessing a vast arsenal of rockets, missiles, drones, and advanced military infrastructure built with Iranian support.

Israeli military leaders argue that the campaign aims to weaken the broader “Iranian axis,” a term used to describe the network of militias and armed groups supported by Tehran across the Middle East. These include Hezbollah in Lebanon as well as other organizations operating in Syria, Iraq, and Gaza. Israeli commanders say these groups form a coordinated system intended to surround Israel with hostile forces and maintain constant pressure on the country’s borders.

Hezbollah’s role in this structure is particularly significant. Over decades, the organization has transformed from a guerrilla force into a heavily armed military-style organization capable of launching large-scale rocket and missile barrages into Israeli territory. Israeli officials maintain that Hezbollah’s integration with Iranian strategy makes it a central focus of current military operations.

Operation Roaring Lion reflects Israel’s broader doctrine of preventing adversaries from establishing overwhelming military capabilities near its borders. By targeting missile infrastructure and leadership structures connected to Iranian-backed forces, Israeli planners aim to reduce the immediate threat to Israeli communities while also weakening Tehran’s ability to coordinate attacks across the region.
