A dangerous human smuggling incident unfolded in Laredo, Texas, after a high-speed pursuit ended at the Rio Grande, where a suspect jumped into the river while holding an infant in an apparent attempt to evade arrest.

According to Texas Department of Public Safety officials, U.S. citizen Brenda Castro was a passenger in a Ford Explorer that fled from troopers during a traffic stop. The pursuit continued along area highways before the vehicle spun out near the riverbank close to the U.S.–Mexico border.

Dashcam footage from the chase shows the SUV speeding at sunset, losing control near the water, and coming to a stop as occupants fled. Castro exited the vehicle and entered the Rio Grande while carrying her infant, wading waist-deep into the water as law enforcement officers issued commands from the riverbank.

Authorities instructed Castro to return to shore, at which point she complied and was taken into custody. She was charged with felony human smuggling and child endangerment. Officials confirmed that the infant was unharmed and was placed in law enforcement care.

Five undocumented immigrants found inside the vehicle were referred to U.S. Border Patrol for processing. The driver of the Explorer fled the scene and is believed to have crossed into Mexico.

Texas DPS officials emphasized that the incident highlights the extreme risks posed by human smuggling operations, particularly to vulnerable children. Law enforcement reiterated that smugglers frequently place minors in life-threatening situations to avoid apprehension, underscoring ongoing public safety concerns along the southern border.
