A U.S. Coast Guard aircrew and a commercial tanker crew successfully rescued three mariners after their sailboat began taking on water more than 450 miles east of Daytona Beach, demonstrating the critical role of coordination and rapid response in open-ocean emergencies. The rescue unfolded under challenging nighttime conditions and heavy seas, ending with all three individuals brought to safety without injury.

The 44-foot sailing vessel, identified as VAIO, activated its emergency position-indicating radio beacon after encountering severe conditions, including 20-foot waves. The distress signal was detected, prompting the launch of an HC-130 Hercules aircraft from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City. By approximately 8:30 p.m., the aircrew located the distressed vessel in the dark, turbulent waters and began coordinating rescue efforts.

Using infrared imaging, the HC-130 maintained continuous oversight of the scene while guiding the motor tanker Radiant Pride to the sailboat’s position. The footage captured from the aircraft shows the vessel pitching violently amid massive waves, underscoring the danger faced by the mariners and the precision required to conduct a safe rescue in such conditions.

After hours of coordination, the Radiant Pride arrived on scene and successfully brought the three mariners aboard by approximately 2:20 a.m. the following morning. All were reported to be in stable condition, with no injuries, marking a successful conclusion to a high-risk operation conducted far from shore.
