A hidden tunnel network has been uncovered beneath civilian homes in the Sheikh Maqsoud neighborhood of Aleppo following the area’s liberation, raising serious security and humanitarian concerns. Newly released footage shows underground passageways discovered shortly after Syrian transitional government forces regained control of the Kurdish-majority district from the YPG/SDF.

Authorities say the tunnels were used to move fighters, weapons, and equipment through residential areas without detection. Access points were reportedly located inside civilian homes, placing residents directly above active underground routes used for military operations. Officials assess that at least three tunnels were dug during the SDF’s presence in Sheikh Maqsoud and were likely used to launch attacks on nearby residential neighborhoods in Aleppo.

The tunnels appear rudimentary but functional, consisting of narrow earthen corridors reinforced with piping, vertical shafts lined with tarps, and scattered debris including rusted barrels. Dim lighting and basic structural supports suggest prolonged use rather than temporary shelter, reinforcing claims that the network played an operational role in urban fighting.

The discovery was made on January 12, 2026, shortly after government forces retook the district following clashes that began in late 2025. The findings come amid renewed fighting, civilian displacement, and growing accusations that the SDF failed to comply with security commitments outlined in a March 2025 integration accord intended to merge SDF forces into national institutions.

Syrian authorities argue that the tunnel system highlights ongoing risks to civilians and undermines confidence-building measures aimed at stabilizing northern Syria. The use of residential areas for concealed military infrastructure has drawn sharp criticism, particularly given the continued presence of families in surrounding neighborhoods.
