Trump Draws Sharp Contrast With Obama: 'I Killed the Ayatollah,' He Didn't

President Trump pushed back on suggestions that he could be tougher on Iran, arguing that prolonged military action would carry real economic costs without delivering a better outcome. "The only way I could get tougher is if I go in there for another two or three weeks and continue to bomb the hell out of them, but what does that get us?" Trump said, pointing to the global ripple effects of extended strikes. He noted that as long as bombing campaigns continue, the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical oil shipping corridors, remains effectively closed, driving up energy prices and disrupting markets far beyond the region.

Trump used the moment to draw a sharp contrast between his own record on Iran and that of former President Obama, arguing that his approach has delivered results no prior administration came close to achieving. "He didn't hit their military. He didn't damage their navy or destroy their air force," Trump said of Obama. "He didn't kill their leadership; I did, twice." The comment referenced the administration's decisive military campaign earlier this year, which culminated in a joint U.S.-Israeli operation that killed Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei along with dozens of senior regime officials, an outcome Trump has repeatedly cited as proof of his administration's willingness to act where past presidents hesitated.

Trump also invoked the 2020 killing of Iranian military commander Qassem Soleimani, contrasting his own record of direct action against Iran's leadership with what he described as Obama's more cautious approach. "He didn't do anything to Soleimani," Trump said, before adding flatly, "I killed the Ayatollah." Taken together, the comments reflect the administration's broader argument heading into the next phase of negotiations: that real leverage over Tehran was built not through restraint, but through a demonstrated willingness to strike decisively, and that the current push toward stability in the region is only possible because of the strength Trump says he has already shown.
