Florida Governor Ron DeSantis didn’t hold back when reacting to the election of Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani as the next mayor of New York City, describing the decision as “an incredible act of ballistic podiatry — shooting yourself in the foot.”  

DeSantis, who has long positioned Florida as the national model of conservative governance, used the biting metaphor to illustrate what he sees as New York’s continued embrace of destructive left-wing policies. “They keep voting for the same ideology that’s driving families and businesses out,” DeSantis said. “Electing a socialist to run the country’s largest city is like doubling down on failure.”  

Mamdani’s election marks one of the most dramatic ideological shifts in modern New York history. His platform — centered on government-run grocery stores, fare-free public transit, and heavy taxes on high earners — has drawn applause from progressive activists but deep concern from economic experts and law enforcement officials.  

DeSantis contrasted New York’s direction with Florida’s economic and social policies, emphasizing that his state’s low taxes, pro-police stance, and emphasis on freedom have led to record population growth and business investment. “We’re proof that when you reject the radical left’s chaos and embrace common sense, people thrive,” he said. “New York could have chosen recovery and safety — instead, it chose decline and ideology.”  

His comments come amid growing national debate over the influence of socialist movements in major U.S. cities and the challenges facing Republicans in urban areas. DeSantis’s sharp criticism underscores a broader conservative concern that Mamdani’s victory represents not just a local political shift, but a warning sign of deeper cultural decay driven by progressive extremism.
