A London man who broke into an art gallery and stole a limited-edition Banksy print in a desperate attempt to pay off an old drug debt has been sentenced to 13 months in prison. Larry Fraser, 49, of Beckton in east London, targeted the Grove Gallery in Fitzrovia in September 2024, taking a valuable print from Banksy’s well-known Girl With Balloon series.

Prosecutors detailed how Fraser forced entry into the gallery before removing the artwork, which he intended to sell quickly in order to settle a longstanding drug-related obligation. The theft drew immediate attention due to the artwork’s value and the prominence of Banksy’s limited-edition pieces within the international art market.

Fraser pleaded guilty at Kingston Crown Court to a single count of burglary. The court noted that while the crime was deliberate and financially motivated, Fraser had already spent a significant period under electronic curfew, which may make him eligible for immediate release depending on time served and administrative review.

The case highlights the increasing trend of criminals targeting high-value, culturally iconic pieces for quick illicit profit—an issue that continues to pressure galleries and private collectors across the United Kingdom.
