A Jewish man is speaking out just days after he says he was attacked outside a Pico-Robertson synagogue by a man who yelled, "Free Palestine" — an incident being investigated as a suspected hate crime by the Los Angeles Police Department.

The Jewish man, who did not want to be identified for fear of his safety, said he is holding up physically after the attack, which took place in an alley behind the Adas Torah synagogue around 10 p.m. Monday night.

"I feared for the end of my life," the husband and father of three said in an exclusive interview with NBC Los Angeles. "My whole life flashed in front of me. I thought that this was it. This is how it's going to end."

He says he was walking home from a different synagogue, dressed in traditional Jewish clothing, when a man ran out of a car and assaulted him.

"All of a sudden, the doors roars open, and he jumps out of the car, and he jumps on me," he said. "Puts his hands all over my neck. Pushes me to the right, pushes me to the left. The only thing I can remember was that I was yelling at the top of my lungs, 'Help. Help.'"

He said that's when the man threw him to the floor.

"As I'm on the floor, vulnerable, and like in shock, he gives me a stare, a very dirty look stare, and says two words: 'Free Palestine,'" he said.

Cameras captured the incident, video shared by The Los Angeles Scoop shows. Although NBCLA did not independently obtain the footage, an Adas Torah representative confirmed it is the synagogue's video and shows the attack.

David Englin, senior regional director for the Anti-Defamation League Los Angeles, said Jewish people are being targeted. ADL's most recent data shows there were more than 530 verified antisemitic attacks in 2024 in the LA-area alone.

"That is more than one antisemitic incident in the LA area a day," Englin said. "Unfortunately, that included 18 physical assaults. That's more than one assault a month on a Jewish Angeleno simply for being Jewish."

The news is especially troubling for the Jewish community in Pico-Robertson.

"The fact that Jews feel uncomfortable about walking in safe neighborhoods is very disconcerting," Joel Kessler said.

Less than 48 hours after the attack, the man hopes this is a learning lesson for everyone.

"I think it is a lesson for all of us to learn that, you know, we have to make America a safe place," he said. "America is all about life, liberty, pursuit of happiness. No one should be afraid to walk out at night. No one should be afraid to walk to synagogue."

Police describe the attacker as a man just under 6 feet with an average build and wearing a camo hat. As of Wednesday afternoon, police have made no arrests.

If you have information on this incident, you are asked to contact LAPD's West LA Division.
