Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has firmly rejected the idea of ceding territory to Russia, following remarks by former U.S. President Donald Trump suggesting that a peace deal could involve “some swapping of territories.”
Trump is scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska next Friday to discuss potential terms for ending the war in Ukraine. Speaking to reporters on Friday, Trump said any resolution might include land exchanges “to the betterment of both.”
Zelensky responded Saturday, making it clear Ukraine would not compromise on its sovereignty. “Ukrainians will not gift their land to the occupier,” he said. “The answer to the Ukrainian territorial issue is in the Constitution of Ukraine. No one will deviate from this.”
The upcoming meeting is drawing global attention as both sides remain entrenched, and hopes for a breakthrough remain uncertain.
