LISBON, Portugal — A tragic accident struck one of Lisbon’s most famous landmarks on Wednesday when the Gloria funicular railway derailed, leaving 15 people dead and at least 18 injured, officials confirmed.
Shocking video from the aftermath shows the tram-like car crushed and mangled along its steep hillside track. Authorities said five of the injured remain in serious condition, with the full toll still being assessed.
The Gloria funicular, which links downtown Lisbon to the Bairro Alto district, is a popular attraction for both locals and tourists. Officials noted it was not immediately clear how many of the victims were foreign nationals.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, evacuating survivors and transporting the wounded to area hospitals. The cause of the derailment remains under investigation, with Portugal’s transport and criminal police examining whether mechanical failure or human error played a role.
The disaster is one of the deadliest incidents in recent memory for the Portuguese capital, casting a shadow over one of its most iconic symbols.
