An Alaska man experienced a terrifying ordeal when his home was torn from its foundation and swept away by storm surge — all while he was still inside. The dramatic incident, captured on video by Steven Anaver, shows his house drifting across choppy waters as the remnants of Typhoon Halong battered western Alaska earlier this week.
Anaver shared the footage with The Associated Press on Monday, revealing the extent of the storm’s destruction as wind and floodwaters uprooted homes and infrastructure in several coastal communities. The storm, which brought hurricane-force gusts and heavy rainfall, left behind widespread damage and power outages.
“It just started moving — I couldn’t believe it,” Anaver said in his video, his voice shaking as the house floated away from its foundation. “The water was everywhere, and the whole thing was swaying.”
Emergency responders said Anaver was able to escape safely after the home drifted to a shallower area. Local authorities have since urged residents to remain cautious as cleanup efforts continue amid concerns of further flooding.
Meteorologists described the storm as one of the most powerful to strike the region in years, fueled by the remnants of Typhoon Halong as it transitioned into an extratropical cyclone over the Bering Sea. The system lashed Alaska’s western coast with intense winds, record-breaking tides, and coastal erosion.
State officials are assessing the damage to determine the need for federal disaster assistance. Early reports indicate multiple homes were destroyed or displaced in low-lying communities, particularly along river deltas and coastal villages.
Despite the devastation, Anaver’s video has become a symbol of survival and resilience amid disaster — a stark reminder of nature’s power and the human spirit’s determination to endure.
