The FDNY credited cutting-edge drone technology and seamless teamwork for a successful rescue in the East River early Saturday morning.
Marine 6 units were dispatched near the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge after reports of an individual struggling in the water. FDNY’s Robotics team quickly launched drones, locating the person and deploying two bright yellow buoys to mark the exact area. The visual markers guided Marine 6 directly to the victim, saving precious time.
“The FDNY Robotics team did an outstanding job,” said Battalion Chief Michael Dowling. “By dropping those buoys near the victim, they gave us a clear visual marker that helped Marine 6 reach the individual much faster. You could see the buoys well before spotting the person’s head above water, especially given the darker conditions. Their quick actions, along with the coordinated efforts of the Marine Battalion, made this rescue possible.”
The victim was safely brought aboard and transported to the 92nd Street Ferry Terminal, where FDNY EMS provided further medical care.
The rescue highlights how technology continues to enhance New York City’s emergency response capabilities, combining drone precision with the FDNY’s long tradition of bravery and coordination.
