Drone footage captured dramatic scenes on Lake Michigan as monster waves slammed into a completely ice-covered lighthouse, showcasing the raw power of winter storms on the Great Lakes.

The video, recorded on December 19, 2025, shows waves reaching nearly 20 feet crashing against the St. Joseph North Pier Lighthouse, which had been entirely encased in ice due to prolonged subzero temperatures and intense winds. Each wave sent plumes of frozen spray into the air, further thickening the layers of ice surrounding the historic structure.

The phenomenon occurs when strong winds whip lake water into freezing spray that adheres to solid surfaces, rapidly building heavy ice formations. Over time, this accumulation can add enormous weight to structures, creating dangerous conditions for nearby piers, vessels, and anyone venturing too close during storms.

Despite the violent conditions, the lighthouse remained standing as waves repeatedly engulfed it, highlighting both the resilience of Great Lakes infrastructure and the severity of winter weather in the region. Officials continue to warn the public to avoid piers and shorelines during such storms, as sudden waves and ice-coated surfaces pose serious risks.

The footage serves as a striking reminder that the Great Lakes can rival oceans in power, particularly during winter, when wind, ice, and waves combine into some of the most hazardous conditions in North America.
