U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz is raising fresh alarms over Iran’s missile program after accusing Tehran of launching an intermediate-range ballistic missile toward Diego Garcia, the joint U.S.-UK base in the Indian Ocean. Waltz said Iran had previously denied developing that class of missile, only for the regime to demonstrate the capability in dramatic fashion. His warning also stressed that the same missile type could threaten not just regional targets, but European capitals as well.

Reports surrounding the March 21 incident indicate that Iran fired two missiles toward Diego Garcia, though neither struck the base. According to widely cited accounts, one missile failed during flight while another was engaged by a U.S. Navy interceptor, underscoring both the seriousness of the attack and the growing range of Iran’s arsenal. The episode marked a major escalation by showing that Tehran is willing to target critical Western military positions far beyond the immediate battlefield.

Waltz’s accusation cuts to a larger concern that Iran has long used deception to obscure the true scope of its missile development. Reuters reported that Israeli military officials described the missiles used in the Diego Garcia attack as having a range of about 4,000 kilometers, enough to place parts of Europe within reach. The broader fear, echoed in public reporting, is that missile advances linked to Iran’s space efforts could eventually strengthen the regime’s ability to pair longer-range delivery systems with more dangerous payloads.

The remarks come as the wider conflict continues to intensify following the February 28 outbreak of war and President Trump’s March 1 announcement of Operation Epic Fury. The confrontation has expanded beyond direct military exchanges to include threats against energy infrastructure and mounting pressure around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route. In that environment, Iran’s long-range missile activity is being viewed not as an isolated act, but as part of a broader strategy to intimidate the West and test how far it can push without immediate collapse.

For the Trump administration and its allies, Waltz’s message is clear: Iran’s words can no longer be separated from its capabilities. The Diego Garcia launch, even though it missed, served as a blunt reminder that Tehran’s missile threat is widening in both reach and consequence. As the regime continues to posture and escalate, the United States and Israel are likely to argue that stronger pressure is not only justified, but necessary to prevent even greater danger from emerging.
