E1 Pilots Walk Away Unharmed After Dramatic Crash During Monaco Qualifying
MONACO — A high-speed crash during E1 powerboat qualifying in Monaco stunned spectators but miraculously ended without injury, as both pilots involved walked away unharmed.
The incident occurred just seconds into the qualifying session when Team Brazil’s Marit Strømøy made a sudden maneuver to the left, reportedly to avoid the stern of Team Alula. In doing so, she collided directly into the side of Team Rafa’s Tom Chiappe, resulting in a dramatic impact that sent debris flying across the water.
Despite the intensity of the crash, safety teams responded swiftly, and both pilots were able to exit their cockpits unaided. Medical staff cleared them on-site, and neither required hospitalization.
E1 officials temporarily halted qualifying to inspect the damage and assess safety conditions. Preliminary reports suggest both boats suffered significant structural damage, though no official statement has been made regarding their status for the upcoming race.
The E1 Series, known as the world’s first all-electric powerboat racing championship, places heavy emphasis on safety innovations. This incident highlighted the effectiveness of those measures, with fans and fellow racers relieved by the outcome.
“Crashes are part of racing, but the most important thing is that everyone is okay,” said an E1 spokesperson. “We’re grateful for the rapid response of our rescue teams and the resilience of our pilots.”
The event is expected to resume once safety checks are completed.
