Economist Stephen Moore, senior visiting fellow at the conservative Heritage Foundation, is calling for a complete overhaul of how the U.S. measures job creation. Speaking on “CUOMO”, Moore argued that the accuracy of jobs statistics has deteriorated over several presidential administrations, regardless of party.
“We have to find new techniques to find out how many jobs were really created,” Moore said. He stressed that monthly employment data is one of the most critical indicators for assessing the health of the U.S. economy — often influencing policy decisions, market movements, and public confidence.
According to Moore, outdated data-gathering methods, inconsistencies in reporting, and reliance on estimates rather than real-time tracking have undermined the reliability of the numbers. He suggested that more advanced analytics and modern tracking tools could help policymakers and economists get a more accurate pulse on the nation’s economic condition.
