A controlled demolition at Plant Wansley in Carrollton, Georgia, brought down two massive chimney stacks in a dramatic scene that stunned locals and rattled nearby skies.
The demolition, captured in dystopian-looking aerial footage, showed the towering stacks collapsing in sequence. A pilot flying near the site said the shockwaves from the implosion shook his small aircraft.
Georgia Power, which carried out the demolition, had warned residents ahead of time that they might hear a “loud thunderclap” as the structures came down. The company is in the process of decommissioning the site as part of its broader transition away from coal-fired energy.
The fall of the iconic stacks marks the end of an era for Plant Wansley, once a symbol of Georgia’s power infrastructure, now reduced to rubble in a moment that looked straight out of a science-fiction film.
