Russian President Vladimir Putin traveled to the Nizhny Novgorod region on Tuesday, September 16, to observe Zapad-2025, a large-scale joint military exercise between Russia and Belarus.

According to Putin, the drills involved around 100,000 military personnel and 10,000 units of equipment stationed in Belarus. The exercise, which concluded with Putin’s remarks, underscored the close military cooperation between Moscow and Minsk as regional tensions continue.

The Zapad (“West”) exercises are held regularly and are viewed as a demonstration of military readiness, showcasing Russia and Belarus’ ability to coordinate forces on a massive scale. This year’s edition highlighted both nations’ preparedness for potential regional conflicts and their commitment to strengthening defense ties.

The size and scope of Zapad-2025 reflect Moscow’s ongoing efforts to project power and reinforce its strategic partnership with Belarus at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty.
