Tragedy in Chicago: 26-Year-Old Woman Killed, 4 Critically Injured in Midnight Boat Crash at Monroe Harbor!

A devastating boat collision on Lake Michigan near Chicago’s Monroe Harbor claimed the life of 26-year-old Johanna H. Gregory and left four others critically injured late Thursday night. The crash occurred around 11:40 p.m. on June 25, 2026, when two recreational boats carrying a total of 14 people slammed into each other near Queens Landing. Gregory was pronounced dead at 12:22 a.m. Friday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. Five people from the more severely damaged vessel were transported to area hospitals, with four in critical condition and one in fair condition. The remaining nine passengers on the second boat refused medical treatment at the scene.

The violent impact heavily crushed the stern and shattered the windshield of one boat, prompting a massive emergency response involving the Chicago Fire Department, Chicago Police Marine Unit, and U.S. Coast Guard. An EMS Plan 1 was declared to manage the multiple victims, with triage categorizing injuries as four “red” (critical) and one “yellow” (serious but delayed). Patients were transported to Stroger Hospital and Northwestern Memorial Hospital as crews worked quickly to provide life-saving care. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is now leading the investigation into the exact cause of the collision.

This tragic incident serves as a sobering reminder of the risks associated with nighttime boating on busy waterways. Authorities urge all boaters to maintain vigilance, follow proper navigation rules, and avoid alcohol or distractions while operating vessels, especially after dark. Our thoughts are with the victims’ families and those still recovering from their injuries during this difficult time in Chicago.
