NEW YORK — In a strategic move that underscores the high stakes of the 2026 midterm elections, Republican Rep. Mike Lawler announced he will seek re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives, abandoning a potential run for New York governor.
The decision comes amid growing pressure from former President Donald Trump and top GOP leaders, who view Lawler’s seat in New York’s highly competitive 17th District as critical to maintaining or expanding the party’s narrow House majority.
Lawler’s shift clears the path for Rep. Elise Stefanik, Chair of the House Republican Conference, to potentially launch her own gubernatorial bid against incumbent Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul in 2026.
“After thoughtful discussions with my colleagues and party leadership, I believe the best way I can serve the people of New York and help save our country is by remaining in Congress,” Lawler said in a statement Monday.
The freshman congressman flipped his suburban district in 2022, defeating Democratic incumbent Sean Patrick Maloney in one of the most closely watched races of the cycle. His district is expected to remain a key battleground in 2026.
Lawler’s re-election bid gives Republicans a stronger chance of defending the seat while offering party leadership the opportunity to consolidate support around a single high-profile challenger to Governor Hochul — most likely Stefanik, should she enter the race.
Democrats have yet to announce a challenger in NY-17, but the district is expected to draw national attention — and funding — as control of the House hangs in the balance.
