A large scrap yard fire broke out Monday on Metropolitan Avenue in Queens, prompting a massive emergency response from the New York City Fire Department (FDNY).

More than 100 FDNY firefighters and EMS personnel rushed to the scene as thick black smoke poured into the sky, visible from several neighborhoods across the borough. Crews battled the blaze in extremely hot and humid conditions, wearing full protective gear under intense heat.

“This is one of those moments that define the grit and professionalism of New York’s Bravest,” said one local official. “Despite the dangerous temperatures, the FDNY showed up in full force and held the line.”

No serious injuries have been reported so far, but firefighters remained on scene into the evening to ensure hot spots didn’t reignite. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Officials emphasized the critical role FDNY plays not only in emergencies but in safeguarding city infrastructure and public health — especially during heatwaves that make firefighting exponentially more dangerous.

As temperatures across the city continue to climb, city leaders are urging residents to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor work when possible, and appreciate the unseen sacrifices made by first responders.
