Australian scientists have discovered a giant new species of stick insect in the high-altitude rainforests of the Atherton Tablelands in North Queensland. Measuring over 15 inches (38 cm) in length, researchers believe it may be the heaviest insect ever recorded in Australia.

The discovery was made during a biodiversity survey at elevation, where the team encountered the enormous insect camouflaged among the foliage. Experts are still studying the species’ behavior, habitat, and role in the local ecosystem, but early observations suggest it may be critically dependent on undisturbed rainforest environments.

This remarkable find adds to the rich biodiversity of Australia and highlights the importance of conserving remote and less-explored habitats.
