Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence announced a significant blow to Russia’s naval presence in the region, confirming a successful strike on a Russian “Buyan-M” corvette in the Sea of Azov.
The warship, armed with “Kalibr” cruise missiles, was reportedly damaged during the operation. While the full extent of the strike has not yet been independently verified, Kyiv has framed the attack as part of its ongoing efforts to weaken Russia’s ability to launch missile strikes from the sea.
The Buyan-M class corvettes are among Russia’s key naval assets, often used to fire precision-guided missiles at Ukrainian targets. Disabling or destroying such a vessel marks a symbolic and strategic win for Ukraine as the war at sea intensifies.
Moscow has not issued an official response to the claim, though Russian military channels have acknowledged “incidents” in the area. Analysts suggest that, if confirmed, the strike could disrupt Russia’s missile-launching capacity in the short term.
