NATO Secretary General issued a strong statement after Russian drones violated Polish airspace on the night of September 10, 2025, triggering a coordinated Allied response.
Polish and NATO air defences were immediately activated, successfully protecting Alliance territory. The operation involved a multinational force, including Polish F-16s, Dutch F-35s, Italian AWACS, NATO Multi Role Tanker Transport, and German Patriot missile systems.
“I commend the pilots and all who contributed to this quick and skillful response,” the Secretary General said.
The North Atlantic Council convened this morning at Poland’s request under Article 4 of the Washington Treaty, which allows consultations when a member perceives a threat to its security. Allies expressed full solidarity with Poland and condemned what NATO described as Russia’s “reckless behaviour.” Officials noted that the violation was not an isolated incident and promised a full assessment of the situation.
The Supreme Allied Commander has been tasked with actively managing NATO’s deterrence and defence posture along the eastern flank, with air defences on heightened alert.
“This only reinforces the importance of NATO and the commitments made at our Summit in The Hague earlier this year,” the Secretary General said. He emphasized the need for greater defence investment, expanded production, and continued support for Ukraine, stressing that Ukraine’s security remains directly tied to that of the Alliance.
Concluding his remarks, the Secretary General condemned Russia’s ongoing aggression:
“Russia is waging a dangerous war of aggression against Ukraine that continually targets civilians and civilian infrastructure. Allies are determined to step up their support for Ukraine in the face of Russia's escalating campaign.”
