Former FBI Director James Comey has been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of making false statements and obstruction of justice, marking a stunning development nearly a decade after the launch of the FBI’s Russia investigation.
The indictment, announced Thursday, makes Comey, 64, the highest-ranking former federal official to face criminal charges connected to the probe into alleged collusion between Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign and Russian officials. If convicted on both counts, Comey could face up to five years in prison.
According to reports, Comey is expected to turn himself in on Friday. His case has been assigned to District Judge Michael Nachmanoff, a Biden appointee, who is scheduled to arraign him on October 9 at a federal courthouse in Alexandria, Virginia. Comey has retained former federal prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald as his defense attorney.
Reacting to the indictment, former President Trump hailed the news on Truth Social, writing: “JUSTICE IN AMERICA! One of the worst human beings this Country has ever been exposed to is James Comey, the former Corrupt Head of the FBI. Today he was indicted by a Grand Jury on two felony counts for various illegal and unlawful acts… He has been so bad for our Country, for so long, and is now at the beginning of being held responsible for his crimes against our Nation. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
The indictment underscores the lasting political and legal reverberations of the FBI’s handling of the Russia probe, which has been a flashpoint in American politics for years.
