A 19-year-old man from Fort Myers was arrested early Sunday morning after deputies caught him driving 106 miles per hour on the Edison Bridge — and his excuse quickly raised eyebrows.

According to the Lee County Sheriff’s Office, deputies clocked Santiago Londono speeding across the bridge using an agency-issued radar device. When pulled over, Londono claimed that his mother was “rushing him” to take his friend home, who was seated in the passenger seat at the time.

The traffic deputy reminded Londono about Florida’s new “Super Speeder Law”, which went into effect on July 1, 2025. Under the new law, driving at speeds of 100 mph or higher is now considered an arrestable offense, designed to crack down on reckless driving and prevent fatal high-speed crashes.

Londono was taken into custody and booked for operating a vehicle over 100 mph. Authorities say his case serves as an early example of how the new law is being strictly enforced statewide.
